As soon as they had the word on SteelMax Consulting and Max Nilson, it was all hands on deck. Recker immediately forwarded the information to Lawson, and he called Jones to get him started, as well. By the time Recker and Haley got back to the office, Jones already had the rundown waiting for them.

“What do you got?” Recker asked as soon as he walked in. He was anxious.

Jones almost hated being the one to relay the news. “I’m sure what I’m about to tell you is not what you were hoping for.”

Recker’s mood was instantly deflated. He could feel the negativity coming. “What is it?”

“Max Nilson, at least on the surface, appears to be a fine citizen. Never been arrested, no criminal investigations against him, nothing that I can find to be a red flag anywhere.”

“Except for Parado telling us this.”

“Except for that,” Jones said.

“Unless she was just giving us a name to get us out of there,” Haley said.

“It didn’t feel like that,” Recker replied. “I thought she was being honest.”

“Maybe she’s a good liar.”

“Well, Nilson’s name did come up already when we ran the initial checks,” Jones said. “Nothing came up then. And nothing is coming up now.”

“That doesn’t mean he’s not involved.”

“No, it doesn’t. It could just mean he’s very careful.”

“Or very good at hiding in the shadows,” Recker said.

As they were talking, Recker’s phone rang. It was Lawson. She had news of her own.

“Hey, so I just so happened to have some free time over the last half hour.”

Recker knew that was unlikely. Nobody at the agency had free time. There was always something going on. You just learned to shuffle projects around depending on the urgency level.

“Free time, huh?”

Lawson chuckled. “Something like that. So when you messaged me about SteelMax, I did a brief check.”

“So did we. Nothing interesting.”

“On SteelMax, no. But did you run Nilson?”

Recker glanced at Jones, wondering if maybe they’d missed something. “Uh, yeah, but nothing popped up.”

“I don’t mean the usual background stuff. He’s supposedly clean on that end.”

“What do you mean, supposedly?”

“Well, I already did some digging on his passport. And did you know he goes to Europe for one week every month?”

“Really? That’s interesting. Nothing really criminal about it, though.”

“No, but he also never visits the same place twice. Twelve different cities in the last year.”

Recker still wasn’t seeing the connection to anything unusual. A lot of business executives, or wealthy people, took monthly vacations. And he would have found it more odd if they were all to the same place, unless he had a vacation home in France or something.

“I can tell by your silence that you have some doubts,” Lawson said.

“Well, I mean, I feel like we’re kind of just throwing straws into the air here.”

“We’re not. Follow me. In the last twelve months, Nilson has not visited one city that would be considered a tourist attraction. You know what’s on his list of vacation cities?”

“I have a feeling the Eiffel Tower is not on the list.
